When Things Fall Apart shows a series of film assemblages that invite us into the in-between zone to which the medium of film lends itself par excellence, where there is room for a different kind of experience of time. Images of celestial bodies are composed of different snapshots of a single day. They meld a seemingly lost past and an inescapable future. The camera wanders over handwritten words on paper: the notes Mater took just after her father’s death and just before her mother died. During that time, the artist was accompanied by death doula Staci Bu Shea, who provides support for loss and grief. Katja considers the text a collaboration between herself and Bu Shea.
